Early Childhood is a language/communication based special education program that provides specially designed free and appropriate instruction to meet the needs of preschool children with disabilities. Instruction can take place in a classroom or home based setting.
Students can enter the program at any time throughout the year as they turn 3, if they are found to be eligible for services.
Who do we serve?
Children between the ages of 3 and 6 are evaluated and must meet eligibility criteria for given disability.
Disabilities include, but are not limited to
Significant Developmental Delay (SDD)
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)
Other Health Impairment (OHI)
Emotional/Behavioral Disorder (EBD)
Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
Speech and Language Impairment
Currently we have many students who are non-verbal, and/or non-ambulatory and require significant adult support.
It often takes more than one adult to meet the needs of a single student for a given task/activity
What do we work on?
Total communication - Students have access to multiple modes of communication (e.g., gestures, signs, pictures, speech generating devices, and/or oral speech)
Play skills - Students work on skills ranging from early developmental cause/effect or turn taking through cooperative play
Social and emotional skills - Students work on being with peers, self-regulation, and many other early social functions
Physical skills - Students work on a variety of gross/fine motor activities
School readiness skills - Students work on joining groups, noticing peers, following routines and directions, and self-care skills (e.g., feeding, toilet training)
When is Early Childhood?
